The hard part is getting congress to work with you. As president i can say i will balance the books, but how can i balance books if congress is writing the checks. I could veto things. and make life difficult for them to pass but thats as far as it goes.
But think in economic terms.
You have how many billions of dollars being invested in iraq and other world aid programs.
Couldnt you take those dollars and invest them somewhere and use the returns on the investment to invest instead?
Initially your funding for those investments would have to be cut short, but once the returns started showing up you would come out ahead.
Or couldnt you take 1 billion dollars, invest somewhere and use the returns to buy down the us debt?
THose are the types of questions i would ask.
Plus i would have to borrow ideas from the chinese and japanese - Buy companies in their countries and outsource their work to america. Sure i would have to pay my workers more and so have to charge more for the product. BUT then my people back home would have more money to spend. While those others have less.
Means more money coming into my country. less going out.
As for taxes - I could be wrong but i really liked the flat tax rate. Get rid of income taxes and have the government collect its money though a sales tax. That way everyone is taxed fairly in my thoughts.
Want to pay for roads? get rid of all the individual state toll booths and put up federal run toll booths at the state border on every major road.
Stop letting companies play the shell game with their revenue - you have offshore accounts you hide the money in? its ok we have onshore cost of doing business taxes.
I think i am just too liberal for president. After all I wasnt born into a rich family and i dont have millions laying around. I was grew up and made my own way. There were times were things were tough and the family lived off ramen noodles becuase pops was laid off. I've been at the bottom and worked for minimum wage doing oil changes and changing tires.
I dont recall in presidents in recent times that have came up from the bottom. They all seem to have wealth in the family to start.
